Long after he returned home, Percy continued to think about Maresa’s reaction. He was aware the uniform had come between them, and because of that he made a special point to see her every day, but by the time the end of his two weeks came, he was not certain anything had changed between them.

He understood the change from Percy to Lieutenant Bronwell was a difficult one for her. Yet something had altered between them; something besides the uniform, and although he had waited for years to see a change between them, this was not what he meant or wanted.

He wanted her to see him for the man he was, not simply as her friend. The problem was, he decided, that he was a man, with a man’s wants, needs and desires, while Maresa … Well, she looked every inch a woman, but her thinking had not kept up with the rest of her.

In some ways, he found that part of her charm, but in other ways, it went beyond exasperating.

He found himself thinking of the past winter, and the snow that had brought such intense quiet, and of the almost exaggerated sense of solitude that came with it. That is how he felt inside, cold and intensely quiet, with a sense of solitude he had never felt before. He wondered how it was that the impressions of winter could so completely describe the way he perceived himself—small beneath a threatening sky, and surrounded everywhere by the white silence of nothing but space.

Perhaps this time at sea, away from her, would be good for them both, and he began to wonder then, if he could be the cause of her slow maturing ways.

Was she too dependent upon him?

He looked at his watch and saw it was time to dress and go after her, for he had promised to take Maresa on a picnic on his last day in Yorkshire.
